Green Earth Institute Conducts Biofoundry Project to Build Biorefinery Technology Platform as Core of Global Bioeconomic Community, the Key to Japanese Government Bioeconomy Strategy

Green Earth Institute (GEI), an investee of PIEF, has started a project for the Development of Bio-foundry Core Technology for Production Process aiming for the Development of Production Technology for Bio-based Products to Accelerate Carbon Recycling, entrusted by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

The OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) predicts that the global biotechnology market will grow to approximately 200 trillion yen by 2030. The objective of this project is to build and commercialize the bio-production process infrastructure necessary to create efficient ways of commercializing bio-chemicals especially in the field of manufacturing, which is expected to grow in the bio-market.

GEI, as a technology venture originating from the Research Institute of Innovative Technologies for the Earth (RITE), will continue developing bio-production processes such as amino acids and licensing them to companies in Japan and overseas. Utilizing GEI’s expertise, the purpose of this project is to organize and operate biofoundry bases for commercializing useful smart cells developed by academia and startup companies in Japan. Once operations are in place, various smart cells will be brought to the bases, and through the development of the optimal bio-production process for each smart cell, different bio-derived products will be born one after another in Japan.
